Throughout the fall, athletes focus on late-season skill refinement and the introduction of new techniques and tactics, off-season goal setting, and fall competitions. As daylight begins to limit riding opportunities, dryland training begins at our private facility, Union Health and Performance. At this time athlete testing, benchmarking, and gap analysis also occur, which informs training for the transition and base portion of the off-season.
From November through until spring, athletes train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings training indoors at Union. Athleticism, mobility and fundamental strength movements are the focus. Monthly training camps and on-bike training ensure that each rider has the opportunity to improve their riding technique and aerobic endurance, while also enjoying time focused on other acitivites.
As spring approaches, athletes begin to transition to speed and athleticism-based training in the gym, along with more frequent high-intensity cardiovascular and strength-endurance training. Longer weekend camps focus on low-intensity volume training and skill development, and the reintroduction of training using Freelap timing as feedback.
As spring arrives, programming transitions from technique to competition tactics. Sessions remain on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with the addition of a weekends in the Whistler Bike Park. The training schedule is aligned with grassroots competitions to provide athletes with valuable learning opportunities and the chance to work together as a team.
Summer training sessions are adapted and aligned to accommodate travel and competition schedules. The U15 cohort continues to train regularly, but the focus shifts towards skill development utilizing the terrain in the Whistler Bike Park as a teaching tool. Grassroots racing, Crankworx, and select domestic event support is built within the program.

"I’ve been training with Joel for several years now, and I love his approach to training because he aims to make you a better rider and an all-around human/athlete. He covers all bases and keeps it fun in the process. If you’re starting racing or chasing down podiums, I highly recommend Blueprint."

When I started training towards my full potential, I tried to take training into my own hands through various internet sources, it was disconnected information drawing me further away from what I really wanted . I went in searching for something that could take me to the next level because I knew I had the ambition but didn’t have the knowledge. Training with Union Athletics has brought me to where I feel like I need to be, always progressing my fitness, my skills and my determination. It has a fun, but challenging functional training plan.

I haven't been working with Union Athletics for long, but from what I have experienced, the workouts, both on and off the bike, are comprehensive, complete, and seem to be working great. In only a few months, I've seen some major improvement in my fitness, strength and overall mobility. Joel and Jay are friendly guys who make you feel comfortable, and with whom you feel as a team working towards the same goals. I strongly recommend it!
